Because there's nothing in it to make it smell like one. This balm is beeswax, organic olive oil, and a handful of whole-plant extracts — chamomile, calendula, comfrey root and leaf, St. John's wort, plantain leaf — finished with lavender essential oil and vitamin E. That's the whole list.

No synthetic fragrance. No masking agents. No "clean cotton" or "spring rain" added in a lab to cover up what the plants actually smell like.

Yes. Herb-infused oils carry the scent of the herb — that's what infusion means. Comfrey and St. John's wort in particular have a distinct, earthy character. It's not a flaw or a sign the batch went wrong; it's what happens when you don't add anything to hide it.

We could. We don't, on purpose.

"Fragrance" on an ingredient label can legally stand in for dozens, sometimes hundreds, of undisclosed compounds — formulas are protected as trade secrets, so companies aren't required to say what's actually in them. It's one of the most common triggers for skin sensitivities and irritation, and it's often where "natural" or "clean" products quietly stop being either.

That's not the direction I wanted to take this brand. After years of working with herbs personally, the whole appeal of an infused balm is that the plant is doing the work — not a fragrance sitting on top of it. Covering that up with something synthetic would mean adding a step whose only job is to smell good, on a product meant to calm and support skin, including skin that's already sensitive, compromised, or healing.

So the tradeoff is real, and I'd rather be upfront about it: you get an earthier, more herbal scent instead of a manufactured one. In exchange, you know exactly what's touching your skin, down to the last ingredient.

More than most people realize. "Fragrance" isn't a single ingredient — it's a legal loophole that can cover hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, since formulas are protected as trade secrets. That means exposure varies wildly from product to product, and you have no way to know what you're actually applying or breathing in.

Research has connected synthetic fragrance to several categories of harm:

• Skin irritation. Fragrance chemicals are one of the most common triggers of contact dermatitis, eczema flares, redness, and itching — especially with repeated use on already-compromised skin.

• Hormone disruption. Many fragrance formulas rely on phthalates to help scent bind to skin and last longer. Phthalates are well-studied endocrine disruptors, linked in research to interference with estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid signaling.

• Respiratory irritation. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by synthetic fragrance can trigger asthma, wheezing, and sinus irritation, particularly with frequent or prolonged exposure.

• Neurological symptoms. Some people report headaches, migraines, dizziness, or brain fog after inhaling fragranced products — a pattern researchers are still working to fully understand, but one that shows up often enough in sensitive individuals to take seriously.

None of this requires a rare allergy to matter. It's simply what happens when scent is manufactured rather than carried naturally by the plant it comes from — and it's the core reason this balm, and everything else we make, skips synthetic fragrance entirely.

The scent softens once it's on your skin and mostly dissipates within a few minutes. What stays is what the ingredients are actually doing.
